The battle of mini tablets

The launch of iPad has added a competitive device into the 7-inch mini tablet wars. Is it a hard decision to choose between these tablets?

Cnet Asia has put together the specs of the iPad mini compared with few popular 7-inch tablets currently in the market, including Google Nexus 7, Samsung Galaxy 7.7 and Amazon Kindle Fire HD. Galaxy Tab 7.7 was chosen instead of the latest Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 for this comparison because the former is more comparable with the iPad mini in terms of screen size and price.

Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire have higher-resolution HD screens which contribute to a more pleasing appearance of text, images and videos. Those on a budget will appreciate the lower starting prices of those two tablets.

iPad Mini knock-off revealed. It’s GooPad Mini!

The Apple iPad Mini has just launched on Tuesday and in less than 24 hours, it has cloned by the Chinese maker. Dubbed as “GooPad Mini”, the iPad Mini knock-off tablet will be launched in November. It is said to be heavily skinned to look and feel just like Apple’s iOS 6.

Apple unveils iPad Mini and iPad with Retina Display

It has been a big day for Apple yesterday in San Jose. Apple CEO Tim Cook took to the stage and presided over an event that launched the long awaited iPad Mini, a revamped 9.7-inch tablet, a super slim new 21.5- inch and 27- inch iMac and a 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display.

iPad Mini

After years of rumours and speculation, Apple has finally announced the much awaited younger sibling to the world’s most popular tablet. The new iPad mini, which can be held in one hand, has a 7.9 inch (20cm) display with 1024 x 768 resolution, weighs in at 0.68 pounds (0.3kg) and is 7.2mm (0.3 inches) thick, a quarter thinner than the newly revamped iPad which was launched at the same event.

It is powered by dual-core A5 chip that delivers responsive graphics and a fast, fluid multi-touch experience. The Mini is LTE enabled and has got the Lightning connector onboard. Apple claims that the Mini will have 10 hours of battery life. It comes with FaceTime HD front-facing camera, a 5MP iSight camera on the back with advanced optics for taking sharp still pictures and recording full 1080p videos, LTE cellular wireless capabilities (in some models), speedy 802.11 A/B/G/N Wi-Fi, and, of course, a Lightning connector.

iPad with Retina display

Along with the iPad Mini launch, Apple has also introduced its refreshed 9.7-inch tablet. The updated iPad continues to have the Retina Display but has the new A6X processor with twice the graphics performance of the earlier A5x processor.There’s improved Wi-Fi and the existing 30 pin dock connector has been replaced with Apples new Lightning port that will be found on the iPhone 5.

Just like the iPad, the iPad Mini will be available in Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + Cellular variant with 16GB, 32GB and 64GB storage capacity. While the iPad 2 Wi-Fi variant version retails at $399, the basic Wi-Fi with 16GBb capacity iPad Mini will retail for $329. The 32GB and 64GB Wi-Fi version will be available for $429 and $529. The Wi-Fi + Cellular variant is priced at $459, $ 559 and $659 for 16GB, 32GB and 64GB capacity respectively.

Available in Black or White, the iPad Mini will go on sale in a selected few countries starting November 2nd. However, the iPad Mini will be available to pre-order on October 26th in the US, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK.

iPad Mini is about to release!

The IT market is filled with the rumors that Apple will launch its 7.85-inch iPad in October with a thinner screen frame to allow the device to feature a bigger display area than other competing products. It is also expected to feature a resolution similar to that of iPad 2.

According to sources from the upstream supply chain, Digitimes reported that supply volume of Apple’s 7.85-inch iPad is estimated to reach four million units per month starting in September in order to prepare for demand from year-end holidays.

The sources also pointed out that the supply chain already started supplying a small volume of 7.85-inch iPad in June with a monthly volume at around several hundreds of thousand.

Though the iPad Mini is said to be priced at US$299 which is higher than Amazon and Google’s US$199 7-inch tablet PC, the Apple is still a threatening competitor in tablet market.

iPad Mini

The late Apple boss Steve Jobs once famously slated mid-sized slates during an Apple earnings call in October 2010, saying:

“The 10in screen size is the minimum size required to create great tablet apps. 7in tablets are tweeners: too big to compete with a smartphone, and too small to compete with an iPad.”

“These are among the reasons that the current crop of 7-inch tablets are going to be DOA — dead on arrival,” he said.

However, size does matter!Some prefer the super-sized 10-inch tablets, others want a more demure model that slips easily into a purse or briefcase. The miniature devices seem to have undeniable attraction which causes Apple to face stiff competition in tablet market. Tablets like the Kindle Fire, for just $199, or the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7-inch have smaller batteries, smaller screens, fewer internal components, and are therefore cheaper to produce and more recently there is another threat posed by the Google Nexus 7.

There have been a lot of rumors which claim that Apple will enter the 7-inch tablet segment to battle the competition. An analyst with Pacific Crest, Andy Hargreaves, notes that Apple will launch a 7.85-inch tablet by October this year and it is expected to come with a price tag of $299, a report by CNET states. According to the report, the analyst states, “We anticipate an entry-level 7.85-inch iPad with 8GB of NAND capacity to price at $299 with an initial gross margin of 31%.

What are the features that consumers would like to see??

The Retina display provides outstanding resolution and is quite widely believed to be the benchmark by which all other mobile devices should be judged.

Consumers anticipate the iPad Mini to be about as thin as Apple can make it.
